Sunday August 28, 2011

We were visited this week by Hurricane Irene this weekend. There was remarkably little damage to the trees in Matthew Henson Park.

The stream levels were visibly much higher than normal.

It is easy to see the effects of the storm on the gage height of Turkey Branch.

 Here is a video:

Friday August 26, 2011

Over the past year, I have collected many aluminum cans that were left as litter, by people having “parties” in Matthew Henson Park.  I decided to take these cans to my local recycling center.  I was amazed to find that I had 20 pounds of cans!

At 40 cents per pound, a made a cool $8, which I will donate to my schools Haiti Action Relief Team which supports the Albert Schweitzer Memorial Hospital in central Haiti.

Today was another day dedicated to removing Japanese Stilt Grass

and Mile-a- Minute vines.  I paid special attention to removing these invasive plants for areas in which they threatened native plant species.

I measured the degree of erosion (in feet) of the "left bank" (western) "right bank" (eastern) and the with of the channel.

The water sample that I took on Monday is positive.

This is very alarming because this sample was taken far upstream.

Sunday August 14, 2011

I returned to the northern section of Matthew Henson State Park where I attended a Weed Warrior event in January.  This area is becoming over-run with roses.  There was a plant nursery in this area many years ago.

I found this interesting specimen.

This area is full of junk and trash.

And some strange structures.

I took a water sample to test for coliform bacteria.

Saturday August 13, 2011

Today was a pleasant day with temperatures is the mid 80’s.  I began my Saturday by clearing an area of Japanese Stilt Grass.  This invasive grass is beginning to go to seed, so I need to remove as much as possible to prevent, or at least reduce, next year’s growth.

My next task is to remove more Mile-a-Minute vines.  This invasive can cover an entire tree and kill it.  Here is a spice bush that needs to be rescued.

Other trees were not so lucky.

I finished the afternoon by picking up some trash in the stream.  It appears that the amount of trash is less this month than in the past.

Saturday August 6, 2011

Today was another day devoted to pulling Mile-a-Minute vines.

Some of the vines grew back in an area that I weeded two weeks ago, so I removed them again!

I also pulled a lot of Japanes Stilt Grass and up-rooted dozens of Wine Berry bushes.

I went upstream, to the source of the western fork of Turkey Branch.  I found a pool of the largest fish that I have ever seen in the Turkey Branch watershed.

I took a water sample to test for coliform bacteria.

There is a sewer near this section of the stream.

The test soon showed a positive result.
