Today was another day of pulling Garlic Mustard.  I selected a large area along the trail and moved towards the stream.

After pulling the Garlic Mustard, I found Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)

The remaining plants native plants in this area included a large Virginia Creeper  (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) and a blackberry bush (Rubus fruticosus).

There was a lot of trash near the stream.  It appears that there was a big party recently!

Wednesday May 18, 2011

We have had one week on heavy rain storms.  A large tree was uprooted and feel into the stream.

I also returned to the Harvard St. gorge, which we cleaned a few weeks ago.

It is slowly being filled with more trash!

The stream is full of algae and I saw several darters.

Good news  for the local environment.  Montgomery County will be charging a 5 cent tax on each plastic bag.  Plastic bags make up a large portion of the trash that I have collected in Turkey Branch.  Washington D.C. enacted a similar law one year ago and local environmentalists say that the number of plastic bags in the Anacostia River has decreased dramatically.

Sunday May 1, 2011

Today was dedicated to removing Garlic Mustard from the park.

The Mile-a-Minute vines are coming up.

Last year's Minute-a-Minute vines nearly killed this oak tree that was planted by the State.

There was a lot of trash in the stream.

And WHO would throw away a Justin Bieber CD??????
