Saturday November 3, 2012

It is very cold today, winter is on its way!  I concentrated on pulling several patches of Wine Berries.

The Park was clean after last week's clean-up.

Hurricane Sandy!!!

I was unable to participate in this Saturday’s Community Cleanup.    However, my neighbors did a great job!

Hurricane Sandy gave us her best shot.  I was surprised at how little damage was done to the park.   There were a couple of trees brought down by the storm and a lot of leaves.

Here is a video of the "rapids" of Turkey Branch.

Saturday August 11, 2012

We have had a couple of heavy thunderstorm but there has been little damage to the park.

I spent some time removing invasive Wine Berry plants.

The stream was fairly clean but there was a lot of trash along the trail.

Saturday July 28, 2012

Today was a nice warm day, so I decided to begin my day by removing several patches of Japanese Stilt Grass.   Here are some before and after images:

I also removed an area full of Wine Berries.

I collected the usual junk, but it appears that the litter-bugs are upgrading their beverages of choice.

I found a small Wild Blue Indigo plant - which is a threatened species.

And finished the afternoon collecting the usual!

Wednesday July 4, 2012

                                  Happy 4th of July!!

We had a powerful storm on Friday night and hundreds of thousands of local residents, including me, are without power.  I journeyed out to Turkey Branch to see how much damage the storm created.

The damage was fairly minor, with only a few broken branches.

The invasive Wine Berries were thriving.

The stream flow returned to normal with more changes to the stream bed.

Sunday June 10, 2012

Final Exams are over and school is out for the summer.

The past winter was unusually warm so the invasive plants are healthier than ever.   I began the afternoon by clearing out some mature Garlic Mustard plants.

There were plenty of other invasives - I have never seen so many varities so early in the year.

There was plenty of Japanese Stilt grass that needed to be pulled.

Mile-a-Minute vines were climbing on fencing that was installed to protect young trees that were planted by the County.  In the past, these vines have killed some of these trees.

There is always interesting junk in the stream and park.   Here is a part of a lawn mower.

Here is an interesting use for a card table.

Friday May 11, 2012

The Wild Lupin (Lupinus perennis), that I planted in my yard, is finally in bloom!

This flower is an endangered plant species in Montgomery County, Maryland.  The Frosted Elfin butterfly (which uses this plant as a larval host) is an endangered species.

Saturday April 14, 2012

Today is a beautiful day for a community clean up.

It is amazing how much trash that is thrown in Turkey Branch!

There are some strange items, such as these new boots and a bleach bottle!

Several ducks were enjoying the day.

And there is evidence of beavers in this area.

The day was a success and the turn out was great.

Sunday April 8, 2012

Today is a beautiful spring day!

My focus for today is the removal of invasive Galic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata).

These plants were everywhere.  So I decided to clear of a section of near the trail.

The stream was full of algae - the most I have seen in the three years that I have been working at Turkey Branch.

I found some lovely wildfowers.

The deer population is very large this year and they are very tame!

I am happy to say that there was not much trash in the Park, but there were a few bottles and an empty liter of vodka.

There will be a community clean up this Saturday in another section of the park.
